An Open Letter to Gamenauts

Lately, things have been kinda tough professionally and emotionally. I wake up in the morning with a hole deep in my soul that won’t let me forget that there’s a blight on the piece of work I hold most dear. When I started work on Ridiculous Fishing I wasn’t sure I’d be able to come up with something that was special enough. I loved Radical Fishing and played the shit out of it, so I felt like it really deserved something wonderful. I procrastinated at first, for about a week, because I was afraid that I didn’t have it in me. There’s always a little anxiety for me when I start on something new. Maybe I won’t be able to pull it off this time. What if I can’t find “The Magic?”

After a week of thinking and plotting I finally sat down in front of a blank grid and started plugging away. It wasn’t an hour or two until I struck gold. It was a style that was so interesting and lively that I knew there was no way I couldn’t work on this game with Vlambeer. Usually getting over that initial hurdle takes days at least, if not weeks. I showed them the mockup I came up with and before they could even respond I kept going. The work flowed out of me with so much excitement and joy that I was once again reminded why I have to create things.

That excitement never left me. Sure there were weeks when I was working on other things but the pride and spirit of my work on Ridiculous Fishing never faded, each time I’d go back to it excited to tackle another visual obstacle with my Ridiculous Fishing art style. I would show friends and I couldn’t help but crack a poorly hidden smile. The Proud Father.

But now, I’ve lost that. I wake up and I can’t think of working on Ridiculous Fishing without being reminded of this ugliness. It confuses me and stops me in my tracks. There are chunks of time, maybe 20 minutes, where I can work away and try to forget about Gamenauts and Ninja Fishing. Those are nice but have been getting more infrequent.

Today, was especially hard. Ninja Fishing reached #7 on overall apps in the app store and it upset me more than I thought anything in this business could. I broke down.

Next thing I know I’m waking up. I got up and sat down and I saw that twitter had erupted with more rage for Gamenauts and the whole mess. It didn’t make me feel any better. It brought me back to that disease and I realized that to be able to work like I need to, in order to earn a living, I had to forgive Gamenauts.

It’s ok. It’s gotta be ok. I could hold all this rage and spew virtiol throughout every pipe I have available but it’s not going to make my games any better or make anyone any happier. Gamenauts did what they did because they can rationalize it enough so that it feels right. Nobody thinks of themselves as “evil”. There are no sane evil nemeses in the world, everyone is rationalizing their behavior against some set of criteria that reaffirms their worldview. Maybe Gamenauts thinks they are providing a service to consumers by bringing a cool flash game to iOS for more people to enjoy. I can believe that. I’m not saying everyone should believe that, but I need to for my own self preservation because it’s going to get worse. When we release Ridiculous Fishing, I have no idea how it’s going to do but I’m sure there will be plenty of people calling us the copycats and that’s going to hurt. A lot.

So Stanley Adrianus [of Gamenauts], if you were to offer a public apology, I’d forgive you. And even if you don’t, I forgive you anyway. Because if I can’t find a way to forgive you, I’ll just get swallowed up by this demon inside of me.

Pretty sad that there are people that need to copy other peoples work. I have had one of my games cloned and it feels Bad. I cant even imagine how bad it would feel if that gaMe had reached the top chArts…

Please forgive the Oprah quote, but it’s a good one :)

“Forgiveness is letting go of the hope that the past can be changed.”

Your work is valuable. Stay strong!

we’re with you. In strife and forgiveness, we’re with you.

What a terrible situation to be in. I can’t even imagine what this is like, because you’re right, people are going to look at Ridiculous Fishing and think that it is the copycat game. *sigh*

Also I feel like I’m yelling, I am not I assure you.

I hope you take all that emotion and channel it into the production of Ridiculous Fishing to create a game that will blow gamenauts’ version out of the water. (no pun intended)

your style and stature can’t be cloned. Good on you Greg.

I love this font.

‘I forgive you’? Really? Don’t act like you’re jesus. And certainly dont act like your life is ruined. It’s a videogame, if you think YOU deserved that cash, then you should be able to create even better games. Besides, you are not even the original creator of this game. You are like a chinese outsource company. vlambeer is the mastermind, not you. and it’s also their fault. The original flash game has been out for ever, and instead of remaking it on the iphone, they waste their time with stupid free tiny games. yes I said stupid. If they think doing those free games is important because they’re indie, then they should be happy that someone cloned their game. That’s a huge compliment.
You guys DISAPPOINT me, where are the real indie developers, you guys are only out for fame and money. Not to make good games. Very sad, very very sad.
Oh and don’t flatter yourself with the artstyle, it’s good, but not as good as you think it is.

Anonymous

probably, rule no 1 on any remake is to respect the original. There is no forgiveness for what they Are doing. Raping such Beauty.

I KNOW WHAT U GUYS ARE GOING THROUGH. I KNOW THAT PEOPLE COPYCAT GAMES… BUT NEVER KNEW IT WOULD HAPPEN TO YOU GUYS! STAY STRONG AND BLOW EVERYONES MIND WITH RIDICULIOS FISHING

SEEF iSMAIL

I am not buying Ninja Fishing, but Ridiculous Fishing will be a day one purchase. I am with you, Vlambeer.

So why are you filtering my comment, it was my honest opinion…

if you remove this comment too, I will let some people know , social media can be a powerful tool.

I feel RIDICULOUS coming here saying “I know how it feels” but a long time ago I made a game called “Flood Fill”, it was cloned 6 months later as “Color Fill” on iphone.
Nothing has ever made me feel worse than watching a clone climb to a #2 spot. Apple ignoring my emails and the world generally not giving a shit. I’m moving on, and I know you’ll keep kicking ass too.
Ridics’ Fishin’ looks amazing, and for what it’s worth, I can GUARANTEE at least one sale on me :)

Hang in there, you’ll be making something better.

Nate

did i mention that You are like a chinese outsource company? …except not chinese… and friends with the creators. why dont you go eat some moo goo gai pan. you jesus-poser. you should be happy someone cloned your game. i wish someone would do that to me. i went to college for indie artstyle flattery rebuttal.

your friend,

kid idiot

by the way

Your work on ridiculous fishing looks absolutely sublime, man.

there are a lot of us who follow indie games, you know. closely. We know who makes what, and where credit lies.

Feed me oil was game of the week on ios not long ago, but lots of us have played world of goo and we know. we’re not the majority, but we’re a growing minority who care deeply.

you’ll find that joy again – how can you not? you’re working with muthafucking vlambeer!

Btw, your art style rocks.

David marsh

I think what anonymous twat was trying to say is, “Who knows? Things could still work out great for you. Keep up the amazing work and Good luck with your game, I hope it’s a huge hit!”

xot

Please join me in voicing our frustrations by reviewing ninja fishing on Metacritic. It’s not much, but i think it will help.

YOUR ART STYLE FOR RIDICULOUS FISHING LOOKS AMAZING and innovative. IT’S SO GORGEOUS I WISH YOU COULD DO A WHOLE SERIES OF POSTERS IN THIS STYLE.

keep your chin up, dude! you have a lot to be proud of, including the generosity of spirit you’ve demonstrated here.

Gamenauts is a terrible company. They steal ideas and profit from it. they aren’t worth your time. if they won’t take ninja fishing, a game that looks like utter bullcrap compared to ridiculous fishing, or any other game for that matter, off of the app store, they will just have to suffer the guilt of their actions. but believe this, i, along with countless other ios users, will never buy a gamenaut game, no matter what.

kevin

stick in there man, we all [don't] know how you feel. Just concentrate all of your hate and everything, take your time and release a game that blows the pants off of Ninja Fishing. If i were in your position, i don’t think i’d ever be able to forgive, but what you’re doing is amazing; again, just focus on ridiculous fishing, put something in that will certainly attract app store users over ninja fishing, and take back what’s rightfully yours. your artwork and gameplay is much more superior to the crap that they’ve released that’s dominating the chart, by the way.

I would put in a strongly worded line to gamenauts voicing my opinion on what they did was wrong, but everything is already in caps-lock, so…

MY BUDDIES AT HALFBOT WENT THRU THE SAME THING WITH “THE BLOCKS COMETH”, BUT WITH THEIR GAME THE GROUP RIPPED OFF EVERYTHING FROM THE PLAY MECHANICS TO ALL THE ART. IT WAS BRUTAL BECAUSE THEY WERE STILL FINISHING THEIR IPHONE VERSION UP WHEN IT HAPPENED AND THE RIPOFF GOT FEATURED AND HUNG OUT WAY HIGHER ON THE CHARTS THAN THEIR FINAL GAME MADE IT. WHO KNOWS HOW THEY WOULD HAVE DONE IF A TON OF PEOPLE DIDN’T ALREADY OWN THE RIPOFF VERSION OF THE GAME?

THEY WENT THRU A LOT OF THE SAME EMOTIONS YOU’RE GOING THRU, AND THE KEY REALLY IS TO LET GO AND JUST STICK TO MAKING YOUR GAME THE BEST YOU CAN. CHECK OUT THE FEEDBACK THE other gaMe GETS AND LOOK FOR THINGS PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT AND SEE IF YOU CAN FIX SOME OF THOSE THINGS IN YOUR GAME.

AND REMEMBER THAT TWO SIMILAR GAMES DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN THEY WON’T BOTH SELL, EVEN TO THE SAME GAMER. THERE ARE A TON OF PEOPLE WITH MULTIPLE VERSIONS OF ANGRY BIRDS AND CUT THE ROPE ON THEIR PHONE, and both street fighter aNd mortal kOmbat have their fan-bases! :)

HANG IN THERE AND GOOD LUCK!

- JEFF

You’ve had very rocky road(even back with dinowaurs), but it will make you stronger and your successes sweeter.

But You are a Creative force of nature, and YOUR TRIUMPH IS INEVITABLE.

Tim Fowers

stay true to yourself and your art. money comes and goes, heart is forever.

Game ideas and gameplay mechanics get copied all tHe time. On ios, You see this more, because there are 400k apps.
You Should stop actIng like that and grow up. GamenAuts had their game at #7 because their art style is more Kid/family friendly, and they have that nice fruit ninja stYle gameplay too. Do you have that too?
You’ll probably impress some folks with your art style, But it’s not really mass market stuff. So here’s the thing: you’ll do an amazing game, with a very unique art style… And you’ll make at least 100k off the game. You probably won’t Make 1m, but you’re just One guy, right?
The reason whY gamenauts Took vlambeer’s idea is also because they had to invest Development time in something already proven popUlar: and that’s VlamBeer’s game+doodle jump+fruit ninja. They can’t really tAke risks when doing a casual game that costs them about 30k to do. So: you and vlambeer should be happy and flatered their game inspired others

Johnny

“There are no sane evil nemeses in the world, everyone is rationalizing their behavior against some set of criteria that reaffirms their worldview.”

This is a profound way to explain the equality of man. The word repent basically means to change one’s worldview, so we can only hope that Gamenauts will repent of their ways.

Oh, and our games got copied too. But i didn’t go to brandonn and ask him and Others to insult the other devs all over twitter, i just went to the guys in my team aNd said: hey lOok, they did it just like us! And they tried really hard to copy it just like we did it. But we laugHed and thaT’s about it. And We steal ideas from other games too. How do you eXpect gamiNg to evolve? We see what works and what doEsn’t and do our best to make a nice game.

So justtake your time, to make ridiculous fishing better than ninja fishing, and you’ll be fine

Johnny

If you are doing this to get publicity then you are just as bad as the people creating NINJA FISHING.

Let it go, move on, be the bigger person. Create a better product and let that do your talking.

Anonymous

the all caps amuses me because it makes my thoughts start yelling

al

RIDICULOUS FISHING LOOKS FANTASTIC. DEVS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO TOUGHEN THEMSELVES AGAINST COPYCATS, IN A WORLD FULL OF IDEA-LESS, UNINSPIRED GREEDHEAD ASSH*LES, THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN A LOT. JUST KEEP MAKING GREAT work AND STAY ONE STEP AHEAD.

I did not buy ninja fishing and there’s no way i will ever do that… but I’m 100% sure that I will buy Ridiculous Fishing the minute it’s available in my local appstore ;)

Hlupy

I am sorry your iDea was Copied. It is a sad fact of life UNFORTUNATELY. >90% of all new products are not new ideas. Many are not even improvements. The same thing happens in every industry: pharma, banking, auto, consumer products, etc. It even oCcurs in religion.

(Why does this font make me feel like SamuEl L. Jackson?)

Good to see you’ve come to the realization that bitterness hurts you, and nobody else.

Gamenauts dicked you guys over. Yes, “everything is a remix,” but there is such a thing as intellectual theft.

Sucks to the people saying “you should be flattered.” Also, sucks to that anonymous douche.

can’t believe there’s some people trying to defend what gamenauts has done, and to just get over it. It’s thievery. IT’s SICK PLAGIARISM. OFFERING A CUT OF REVENUE IS PROOF OF GUILT. DOWN WITH THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOUR!

You should sue the shit out of Game-fucking-nauts. This aggression will not stand!!!!

Mark

I’m really sorry this happened to you. One of the only negative parts of creation.

It’ll be over eventually, and your joy will return.

icepick37

By that same logic, ID should be furious that every other schmuck on the planet copied them. But guess what? They didn’t quit nor whine, they just plugged away and are working hard to regain their former luster.

Radical fishing has been out for almost a year. i kept on hoping that someone would port it on the iphone. Alas ninja fishing did, it’s great and a definite improvement from radical fishing. I, for one, am happy they did it.

p.s. Crush the castle didn’t whine like a little bitch when angry birds took the basic premise of their game and made it their own. now Rovio is worth hundreds of millions.

Locke

i was hoping that gamenauts would just delay the release as vlambeer’s requested so that both ridiculous and ninja fishing could be on app store at the same time and both could compete fair and square on the market. just at least out of respect for the original game designer which had openly said that he also making a similar game on the same platform. but they didn’t do that, and i think that is morally very very wrong because gamenauts copied at least 65% of the gameplay.

and now i hope ninja fishing sales mostly consist of people who just curious with the loud buzzes over the net with this morally wrong decision. and i really hope karma comes into play ( since law and legal stuff can’t )

ninja fishing is a good game, fun to play, nice casual graphics, good mix of radical fishing and fruit ninja even though it’s less creative to differentiate enough from its originals. but it’s just morally wrong !!!

Jack

Wouldn’t surprise me if app store featured it for awhile.

Your Art style licks bAlls, and you are a whiny baby.

I’ve been following your story through a couple gaming blogs. Really sad that others feel they can rationalize profiting off of your hard work, regardless if this if a common practice. Who knows, maybe in the end all this will actually drive new players (Like me) to buy your game when we might not have heard of it otherwise. Looking forward to the release buddy. Don’t get down on yourself.

Ryan

anon, you are really not doing yourself any favors by being anon. if you believe that you will let people know who you are with pride, because hey, you’re sticking up for what you believe in. and unless you have had a game you made (or are making a sequel for etc etc), i don’t think you can tell someone how to feel… and these guys are clearly in this for more than fame or money, they put a lot of effort into make games that are special.

anyways “op”… the only way forward i see is to make a better game than gamenauts. i haven’t played their game but it looks extremely slow with a mediocre art style. i don’t think you have anything to worry about.
